Frequently Asked Questions

What are Lamy pens known for? +
Since 1930, Lamy has crafted its pens at a single site in Heidelberg, Germany, producing durable, iconic Bauhaus-inspired designs. Two pens define its reputation: the Lamy 2000, all-brushed Makrolon with a semi-hooded gold nib, and the Safari, introduced in 1980, the fountain pen many of us learned on and still often reach for as first-time writers. Buy a Lamy, and you're buying that mix of sleek design and solid German build, at prices that start low and climb only when the materials warrant it.
Which Lamy fountain pen should I choose? +
For most people, a good first Lamy pen is the Safari. It's tough, forgiving, cheap enough to learn on, and shares its nib and grip with Lamy's whole entry range. For the same pen clad in anodized aluminum, step up to the Al-Star. If you're ready for Lamy's flagship, the Lamy 2000 fountain pen is the 1966 icon with a 14k gold nib and a built-in piston filler, a real jump in price and refinement.
What's the difference between the Safari and the Al-Star? +
The difference is in the body material: the Safari is made of molded ABS plastic and the Al-Star has an anodized aluminum finish. Because they share the same nib, feed, grip, and cartridge-or-converter filling, the two write exactly alike. The Al-Star is a little heavier, at around 22 grams to the Safari's 17, comes in its own finishes, and costs more for the metal build, though that aluminum actually scuffs a touch more easily than the Safari's plastic. Choose the Safari for the lightest, toughest, most affordable version, and the Al-Star if you like the feel of a metal barrel in-hand. Our Safari vs. Al-Star comparison walks through both side by side.
Which Lamy fountain pens have a metal body? +
Made with an anodized aluminum exterior, the Al-Star and Lx are two light ways into a metal Lamy and share all their internals with the plastic Safari. The Logo offers an entry into brushed stainless steel in a slim, textured body, while the CP1 gives you a sleek, ultra-slim profile in a classic cylindrical shape. For a heavier in-hand feel, the Studio features a weighted steel body and its signature propeller clip, the Aion is one seamless piece of brushed aluminum, and the Scala delivers a substantial, solid-steel build in brushed or lacquered finishes. At the top of the range, the Dialog 3 provides a brass barrel that houses a retractable 14K gold nib.
Which nib size should I choose for a Lamy fountain pen? +
For most people, a Fine or Medium is the safe choice, with Extra Fine and Broad available when you want the extremes. Medium lays down a rounder, wetter line that shows off ink color and feels smooth on the page, which makes it the easy everyday pick, while Fine creates a thinner, controlled line that suits smaller writing or office paper. Lamy nibs run about a size broader than Japanese pens like Pilot or Sailor, so a Lamy Fine writes closer to a Japanese Medium. If you're coming from a Japanese pen and want the same width, size down a step. Many Lamy models also offer a left-hand (LH) nib and a beginner (A) nib if you need one.
Can I swap a nib from one Lamy pen to another? +
Yes, because most models share the same slide-on steel nib unit, the Z50. It pulls straight off the feed and pushes back on in a few seconds, and the same unit fits the Safari, Al-Star, Vista, Studio, CP1, and most of the modern range. The main exception is the Lamy 2000: its hooded 14k gold nib isn't swappable with the Z50 units, so treat the 2000 as a special case. With most other Lamy fountain pens, you're not locked into whatever size you pick today.
How do I fill a Lamy pen with bottled ink? +
To fill most Lamy fountain pens from a bottle, you'll need a Lamy converter, sold separately on our Lamy refills page. Use the Z28 converter for Safari, AL-Star, Vista, and Lx models, and the Z27 converter for higher-end models like the Studio, Aion, and CP1. To fill, dip the nib fully into the ink, twist the converter piston down and then back up to draw the ink in, and wipe the nib clean. The Lamy 2000 is the exception: as a built-in piston filler, you fill it straight from the bottle with no cartridge or converter. If you're replacing a Lamy ink cartridge, look for the proprietary Lamy T10 cartridge rather than the standard international size.
Do Lamy pens also come as rollerball and ballpoint pens? +
Yes! Rollerballs, ballpoints, and mechanical pencils are also popular Lamy models. The Safari, Al-Star, or 2000 that you like in fountain pen form almost certainly exists as a rollerball and ballpoint too, so you can pick whichever system suits you best. This page also carries gift sets, from starter kits to special releases a collector would appreciate. One thing to note is that the refills are not generic but are Lamy's own, so reach for the M16 for most ballpoints and M63 for most rollerballs, with some exceptions. If you ever have a question about which refill your pen takes, always check our product descriptions.
Why is there such a wide price range across Lamy's pens? +
Lamy's prices range so widely because the line runs from a mass-produced everyday pen up to a hand-finished flagship. On the whole, you're paying for materials and the nib. At the entry end, the Safari and Al-Star use molded plastic or anodized aluminum with a stamped steel nib, which keeps them genuinely affordable. In the middle, the Studio and Aion add heavier, polished-metal bodies. At the top, the Lamy 2000 carries a 14k gold nib, a built-in piston filler, and a brushed Makrolon-plus-steel build.
Is Goldspot an authorized Lamy dealer? +
Yes, we're an authorized dealer for all the pen brands we carry, Lamy included. Buying from an authorized dealer means the pen comes through Lamy's own supply chain, backed by the maker's warranty against manufacturing defects. It also means you can ask our team of pen people which model or nib fits your writing style, and we'll point you in the right direction.
